I have the honour to forward herewith letters

from Kesars. Jeffries and Evans, asking that a revision of

their salaries may be considered with the 1927 Estimates.

In recommending these applications for the

favourable consideration of Eis Excellency the Governor,

I would again submit that, as in other colonies, the salarie

of the Director and Chief Assistant of the Observatory

should not be less than those of the Harbour Master, and

Assistent Harbour Master, respectively. The duties of the First Assistant are practically the same as those of the

Chief Assistant, but as he is not likely to be called upon

to take charge of the Observatory, his salary should be slightly less than that of the Chief Assistant~

After 30 years' service as Head of Department the salary of the Director is at present less than that of Deputy Superintendents of Police, Engineers, the Superintend ent of Crown Lands, the Superintendent of Surveys and the Superintendent of Prisons, (whose salary has been substant- ially increased recently). The salary of the First Assistant is about equivalent to that of Sanitary Inspectors and promoted police constables.

During my directorate not only have improvements been effected in the original departments of the Observatory but seismological and upper air research departments have

been instituted, and on the completion of the proposed
